About Mayor Levar M. Stoney
In November 2016, Levar Stoney was elected as the 80th -- and youngest -- mayor in Richmond’s history.

A proud graduate of James Madison University, he is a former Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Virginia who, in 2014, became the first African-American to serve as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia after being appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

In that role, he led the largest, oldest, most public-facing office of the Governor's cabinet, and was the driving force behind transforming the process that has restored civil and voting rights to more than 18,000 disenfranchised Virginians -- more than the past seven administrations combined.

Since his election as Mayor, he has distinguished himself as a progressive, energetic and innovative leader who is redefining the way city government works, and is promoting community engagement and regional cooperation to build what he calls One Richmond -- a city that is welcoming, inclusive and works for all.
